GENERAL: MDIX and Auto-Negotiation

Evening,I've had the unhappy pleasure of dealing with a couple of ISP's recently. Both for some reason insisted that I disable auto-negotiation and force my uplinks to 1000Mbps and Full Duplex. Now I've always been of the opinion that a Gig interface is going Auto Negotiate, everytime, without exception. So, I pushed back. The deal with gigabit ethernet over copper is that there is a negotiation of

GENERAL: Running out of space in your IOS flash?

It's been a while since I had to do this but I pulled my 2621XM out of the attic today for some CME4.1 work. I was trying to load the latest firmware onto the router for a 7911 but I ran out of space in the flash. The deal here is that unlike a hard disk with a file allocation table where the OS will makr a segment as back in use when the file is removed....IOS doesn't sometimes do that. So every so

GENERAL IGNORANCE: Whats my name?

Why do we get these IOS 'issues'? This is a very mature operating system with huge engineering resource so why do we get these inconsistencies. This rant may very well turn into a general ignorance issue for me but I'm going to blast it anyway.I've setting the hostname on a switch OK? No problem. I'm going to type 'host', which is short for hostname. There are no other commands that start 'host' so

SCREENOS: Controlling User Auth Timeout

I have a ScreenOS firewall and access to my proxy service is controlled on it using local users defined on the firewall itself. I noticed that after I had authorised myself to access the proxy service it eventually denied me access. In other words it timed out!So I had to trace where to extend the timeout period and I found it!From the main screen click 'Configuration' -> Auth Servers then click

JUNOS: Force users to logout

I hate it when I login to the router and try to make some changes and it router tells me other people are logged in. Sure I can run a show | compare to see any uncommitted changes but you know what, I want my own space ;-)So before you make any changes you can either run the 'configure exclusive' command to ensure the router is all yours or else kill everyone off!First things first, here is what the

VOICE: IOS SIP Trunk 403 Forbidden error?

I spent a few hours on this one. Here is the situation:Cisco 2621XM has a SIP trunk setup between itself and an online SIP trunk provider called voipfone.co.uk. The trunk is up and established:I cal make calls outbound to their ECHO test number on 152 and their COURTESY number 155. I can also take incoming calls to my SIP number 057XXXXXXXX. This all looks good. What I can't do however is call anything

VOICE: Phone registered but no dial tone?

Another quick fix to a simple problem. I registered a 7960 to my CME 4.1 router (2621XM). The phone checked out as registered and the screen on the phone was fine. Here is the output from 'show ephone'. You can see there are two other phones UNREGISTERED but the 7960 is REGISTERED. I see that the firmware on the phone is newer than the server version...but hopefully that's backward compatible. Please

VOICE: Music on Hold (MOH) beeping not playing?

Sometimes the simplest of tasks can drive you nuts. For about 10 minutes now I was looking around Call Manager looking for the MOH source, server and configuration of Music on Hold. The main area for these voice settings is under the Phone configuration itself. Here is a screen shot of my setup. You can see the default Music on Hold 16-bit PCM file here called SampleAudioSource. The more files you upload
